Although The Plough stems from the rural province Groningen in the Netherlands, they were more than just a local art group. The Plough was highly influenced by the German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, whom Jan Wiegers met and worked with during his stay in Davos. But their international connections didn’t stop there: during their 15 year anniversary exhibition, their international reach became more apparent by the exhibited works from some of the greatest artists of that time, such as Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, James Ensor, Wassily Kandinsky, Constant Permeke and Pablo Picasso. Although the group quickly fell apart after this event, they can be considered one of the most influential art groups in the Netherlands of that time. Their work had considerable international interest and was highly valuable until The Plough’s reputation got ruined by a large number of forgeries.
In the subpages an overview will be given of the history of The Plough, as well as personal biographies of the artists that were plagued by the forgeries.
